Tip #2 – Rest For The Weary!

Are your chops feeling weary (tired) or just plum worn out?  Instead of taking time away from the horn, alter your practice routine.  I did this over the weekend and it has significantly improved things!!!  I spent the day yesterday just playing the lower register Clarke studies up to middle C.  NOTHING past that.  I also played to the point that my chops felt really puffy and tingly!  When I could no longer tongue clearly or get a good clear sound, I stopped for the day.

What this will do is really loosen up the lips without over taxing them.  The rest (for the remainder of the day) will help them return back to normal.  You’re working articulations, technique, AND loosening the chops all at the same time!  Not a bad way to spend an hour or more…
