Here Are your Weekly Tips:

Tip #1 – It’s Not the “WHAT” We Practice, it’s the “HOW” We Practice the “What” That Adds Improvement!

Many times I am asked “What can I practice to make “X” in my playing better?”  Arturo told me last year in the interview that I did with him for “About Face” that he always practices the classic books… Arban’s, Clarke, Schlossberg, etc.  So there’s the “WHAT” to practice.  We’ve all known about these books for years, but most of us avoid practicing out of them the “PROPER” way… that’s the “HOW!”

For instance – if you are in the habit of playing Clarke #2 without a metronome and only practice the F, G, C, etc., you’re practicing the right “WHAT” but not with the right “HOW!”  To really improve, you MUST use a metronome and focus on the more difficult passages… making them all even.  Clarke even wrote at the top to NOT focus or waste time on the easier passages.

All too often we’re looking for (and sometimes “waiting for”) a magic bullet exercise that is going to be the “AH-HA” eye opening thing that will take us from high school level to Doc Severinsen, Arturo Sandoval, etc.  When all along, we have the right “WHAT’S” in front of us…

Tip #2 – What Motivates You?

Whether you can spend only 30 minutes per day practicing, 1 hour every few days, or hours per day, what drives you?  Something keeps you coming back to the horn, looking for tips, tricks, etc.  Sometimes it’s a dream that just won’t fade away with the waking hours… sometimes it’s a passion that keeps coming back every time you hear the sound!

This week – we want to know what drives you!

“My philosophy of life is that if we make up our mind what we are going to make of our lives, then work hard toward that goal, we never lose – somehow we win out.”

Have a GREAT week!
