Tip #1 – Consistency Is Key
With every single triumph I can account for in my growth musically and with my trumpet skills, I have to note that consistency over a long period of time is the major contributing factor! Anything that I had a difficult time overcoming or have yet to leap the hurdle in, largely goes back to consistency – or inconsistency. For a very long time, I had a major block concerning improvisation, I would start working on it, get frustrated in a short amount of time (a week or two) and give up. When I made the commitment to NOT give up and stayed on it through thick or thin, I started to make progress… I am certainly not where I ultimately want to be (are any of us?) but I’m certainly further along than when I would start / stop!
Watching students over an extended period of time, the same holds true… success does NOT occur in a day, week, month, or even sometimes a year… but over the course of being consistent and allowing for careful conscious practice anyone can make steady progress toward our ultimate goal! Ultimately, Consistency is the keys to the kingdom! Don’t give up and don’t stop!
Tip #2 – “Maria”
Here is a clip from one of the tunes we did May 4th in Hollywood to commemorate Maynard Ferguson’s birthday… Enjoy!
Focus more on your desire than on your doubt, and the dream will take care of itself. You may be surprised at how easily this happens. Your doubts are not as powerful as your desires, unless you make them so.
