Tip #1 – Trumpet Trial Etiquette

This tip will go hand in hand with the below video… years ago, I found it completely necessary to join in the high note fest at any turn that I could find.  In other words, when I would go to a music conference with vendors displaying new horns, I would have to pick up as many as I could and “put them through their paces” by playing loud and high.

But I realized, that was more for my ego than it was for my trial of a horn.  The real trial comes with how the horn responds to you as a player.  Not “just” in range or how fast you can play the coolest thing you’ve learned to date.  I look for response, how it feels in my hand, tone color, and ergonomics of the horn… how comfortable are the slide rings, etc.

Just remember this mantra… just because you can, doesn’t mean you should…

Tip #2 – Video…

“Whatever you want to do, do it now. There are only so many tomorrows.”
