Hello Everyone and welcome to a new era in music. a new President and something new for you to learn here on trumpetresources.com. Last week We once again talked about Triads, and of course that is something that needs to be practiced until it is part of you. I always recommend that In one of my earlier weekly Tips around Last October I stressed scales and listening which we will talk about a little today. Yes all 12 scales in both Melodic minor and Harmonic minor scales. And to refresh your memory I stressed learning maybe three major scales in a weeks time , then moving one one by one each day. Now working with a metronome is very important while learning scales and playing rhythms. Keeping time is so crucial in jazz performance as well as any other types of music especially classical, and as we go along and start improvising. We will be using a metronome at all times. This is training in every way shape or form. When you first learned to ride a bicycle you were using training wheels at first. This process took time before your parents felt secure enough to take them off so you can ride without them. This is the same concept in music. Music is based on meter or time. that meter is recognized as a metronome. IF you don’t have one you can go online and puch n metronome and you will see a link that says” FREE METRONOME online. Click that one . The others may be just a sale of one which you don’t need to buy when you can get it for free.
We also talked about rhythms. which is the basis for all music. Now in regards to knowing all your keys. in sharps or flats, there is a wonderful video that you can upload on your computer. I saw it last week and I find this method to be one of the best in finding out keys with the circle of 5ths and 4ths. I was amazed how this teacher was so thorough and how he made it so easy to understand. When i learned it many years ago It was not laid out this way so My recommendation is to go to Music Theory 101. part 1. i am not sure of the authors name at this point but if you can’t get it then get back to me on this and i will post it for you again.
Now As I said many times my goal is to have you start to improvise on your trumpet. but that is something that will come sooner than you think If you put in the work i have discussing each week. This is a process and this process doesn’t happen over night. To learn how to improvise properly . i have had the pleasure of being part of a Marvin Stamm Clinic many years back and very honestly his complete clinic was based on “Listening”. What he was trying to convey that My jazz teacher Bob Arthurs always said to me when i was a seventeen years old and for many years after that. that “you have to find different legendary soloists an make one particular solo part of you by listening to it for a while before trying to play it. then you will sing it almost as if you were the instrument. When you are able to sing it thoroughly which may take weeks, then you will start to play it. The playing part is really the fun part after all the work that you put into it. Now that does not mean that we are finished with the fundamentals,and i don’t mean this to scare you but that will be with you the rest of your life when you practice. As you go onto your second solo to listen to you will see it will be a little easier and each solo you work on will educate you in how these players “got that style”.
But you want your own style, something that will identify your playing. You will be building a library of solos in your head over a period of years. You are learning another language. This language is not English or Italian or japanese, it is called Jazz and the only way to learn this s to listen. When a bay learns to talk . They listen to their parents and others . They learn a word maybe in certain amount of time, then they learn more words the way we speak which make take two to three years before they can actually put together a complete sentence. Well it;s the same thing in jazz. Each week we will be either going over something that we spoke about two months ago or we will surge ahead to start the actual improvisation on a tune. So if this is something you want to do , then it has to come in your heart by Listening to other players that have gone through this and process and became great. They are Miles Davis; Dizzy Gillespie; Clifford Brown; Roy Eldridge; Freddy Hubbard; Maynard Ferguson;.Doc Severensen, Arturo Sandoval, and Clark Terry.There are so many and the list goes on and on. These are just some to name a few , but these guys are some of my mentors or idols that I listened to over the years.. They know the language of jazz There is o much involved but in the long run it all pays off.
