Tip #1 – New Year Resolution – CONSISTENCY!
This year if one of your resolutions is to try to practice more, get back into playing, take lessons, get out and gig, etc. then there is one word that NEEDS to be in your daily mantra! CONSISTENCY!
Much like sleep experts say that there really is no “catching up” on lost sleep, there really isn’t any truth to “catching up” in your practicing either. The best medicine for improving your playing is slow and consistent. FIRST and foremost – don’t set short sighted goals that will put pressure on your illusion of time. Remember that a solid 10 minutes of thought induced practice is FAR more beneficial than just whaling away for hours on end one day a week.
One of my musical hero’s is Michael Brecker… below is a GREAT video interview that was posted on YouTube some time ago. If you’re unfamiliar with Michael, he was one of the most innovative tenor sax men of recent times. Ask any jazz saxophonist, and they will tell you EXACTLY who Michael was…
